Picatinny rail for Winchester
Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in 1866 by Oliver Fisher Winchester in New Haven, Connecticut. The Winchester Model 1873 is famous as "The Gun That Won the West" – a lever-action rifle that was practically the standard weapon on the American frontier and is inextricably linked to North American Wild West history. The Model 70, introduced in 1936, traditionally bears the title "The Rifleman's Rifle" and is considered one of the most iconic bolt-action rifles ever – a title earned through a combination of craftsmanship, technically well-designed construction, and consistent precision. Winchester is now owned by the Herstal Group (FN/Browning), while the brand name and the identity of the rifles remain strong.
This covers the Winchester 70 Long Action, Winchester 70 Short Action, Winchester 70 WSSM, and Winchester XPR Short Action. These are four separate rail choices with their own hole spacing and mounting geometries.
Winchester Model 70 – action type and generations
The Winchester Model 70 is produced in Long Action, Short Action, and WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum). The three action variants have different hole spacing and each requires its own rail. WSSM is a particularly compact magnum variant with shorter and wider cartridges than standard Short Action – this affects the receiver's geometry and is not compatible with standard SA rails.
In addition, there are generational variations in the Model 70: pre-64, post-64, and newer editions may have deviations in hole spacing. Confirm with the A/B/C control measurements. The difference between short and long action is explained in the guide on short action vs. long action.
MOA cant for Winchester Model 70
The Winchester Model 70 is used for precision shooting and long-range hunting. For these setups, it is relevant to consider a rail with MOA cant. Some rails for the Model 70 are available with a cant that provides more upward adjustment range in the scope – an advantage when shooting at long distances, where the scope's internal adjustment range is otherwise limited. The principle is explained in the guide on MOA cant.
Winchester XPR
The Winchester XPR was introduced in 2015 as a more affordably priced bolt-action platform. The XPR and Model 70 do not share mounting standards – they have fundamentally different receiver constructions and hole patterns. A rail for the Model 70 will not fit the XPR. The XPR is covered here in Short Action. Check the model designation carefully and confirm with the A/B/C control measurements.
Material and use scenario
A Winchester Model 70 for precision hunting and classic optics in fixed rings pairs well with steel, which matches the rifle's historical profile and provides maximum stability. An XPR for versatile hunting use can do well with aluminum and keeps the weight down. The material difference is described in the guide on steel vs. aluminum for Picatinny. Mounting requires threadlocker and torque control – the procedure is in the mounting guide.
The Winchester Model 70 and XPR are two significantly different platforms. Confirm action type, generation variant, and model with A/B/C measurements before ordering – the model name alone is not sufficient for a rifle with such a long production history as the Model 70.
