Picatinny rail for Savage
Savage Arms was founded in 1894 by Arthur Savage in Utica, New York. The brand is today strongly associated with two technical solutions: the AccuTrigger system, introduced in 2003, which provides an adjustable and crisp trigger pull without the compromises usually associated with factory-adjusted triggers, and the barrel nut adjustment, which allows the cartridge headspace to be set by turning a nut on the barrel end. The latter enables quick and precise headspace adjustment without special tools – a real advantage in the custom segment. Both solutions help explain why Savage can deliver competitive precision in a wider price segment.
This covers Savage 110 Long Action, Savage 93, Savage Axis 308, Savage B17, and Savage Model 12. These models range from rimfire to centerfire precision rifles – with significantly different constructions and mounting requirements.
Savage 110 – generation and action type
The Savage Model 110, introduced in 1958, has a long production history, and the generation of your rifle is relevant for rail selection. Savage changed the receiver design in 2003 when the AccuTrigger was introduced. Pre-2003 models have a flat-back design; post-2003 models have a round-back design. The two generations require different rails, regardless of whether both are marked "110 Long Action."
Confirm action type and generation with A/B/C control measurements. What Long Action specifically means for rail selection is explained in the guide on short action vs. long action.
Savage Axis, 93, B17, and Model 12
The Savage Axis 308 is a newer and affordable centerfire bolt action with its own hole spacing – not compatible with 110 rails. The Savage 93 is a rimfire bolt action in .22 WMR and similar calibers with its own mounting points. The Savage B17 is a 17 HMR rimfire platform. These rimfire models should not be confused with centerfire models in rail selection – they are fundamentally different constructions.
The Savage Model 12 is a precision-oriented centerfire platform for bench rest and heavy use. Carefully check the model designation and confirm with A/B/C measurements, as the 12-series has its own hole spacing and is not compatible with 110 rails.
Material and use scenario
A Savage 110 and Model 12 for precision shooting call for steel. An Axis for versatile hunting use can do well with aluminum and keeps the weight down. The material difference is covered in the guide on steel vs. aluminum for Picatinny. Mounting requires threadlocker and torque control – see the mounting guide. Always check A/B/C measurements on the specific rifle before ordering.
The Savage platform is popular for custom builds thanks to the barrel nut system, which allows precise headspace adjustment without special equipment. This makes Savage rifles particularly interesting in the precision environment, but it also places demands on rail selection: the generation of the 110 action and the action designation are both crucial parameters. Confirm with A/B/C measurements before ordering. A pre-2003 flat-back rail will not fit a post-2003 round-back action, and vice versa – even if both are stamped "110 Long Action."
